Corrosion basic reactions, tests, prevention
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is twofold. It gives a brief overview of the fundamental aspects of corrosion, described by many in a more complete fashion (1-7). It also points out some of the challenges and rewards which are present when metals are in the form of thin films. Corrosion is costly, chopping away about 4% of the gross national income, potentially dangerous as it can cause fatal accidents, and ubiquitous. 'Rust never sleeps', says a song (8), but with a better understanding of the process a considerable percentage of it could be avoided.
