Dr. Pokharel is a Research Scientist in the Quantum Computational Sciences group at IBM Research - Almaden. His research focuses on analyzing and improving quantum computer functionality, specifically through error mitigation, suppression, correction, and detection. He is also interested in modeling real quantum devices using open quantum systems theory and finding near-term applications for quantum computers by tailoring quantum algorithms to hardware and vice versa.
He received his B.A. in Physics and Mathematics from Carleton College, Minnesota, where he researched quantum to classical transition in chaotic systems. He also has an M.Sc. in Physics from the University of New Mexico with a focus on quantum information and computation. He completed his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Southern California under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Lidar. His Ph.D. research focused on demonstrating error suppression and algorithmic quantum speedup on noisy-intermediate scale quantum computers.
