Visualizations illuminate disparate data sets in the earth sciences

Abstract

With the proper instruments to access, reorganize, realize, and render multiple data sets while retaining the essential characteristics, data may be readily examined at many different levels. The support of a variety of visualization strategies properly coupled with powerful manipulation functions promoted visual exploration and correlation. In particular, the use of cartographic warping to the correlation of global atmospheric data sets yielded visualizations that depicted a simple motion about various atmospheric occurrences and dynamics. Correlative visualization attempted to provide both the capability to perceive multiple sets of data in exactly the same mode and the capability to employ a variety of visualization strategies within the chosen coordinate system.
