Reaction of water with ion beam modified metal/polyimide thin films

Abstract

This paper addresses the effects of ion beam modification of the polyimide surface on water transport and Cr/polyimide adhesion durability. We have performed peel strength measurements to characterize adhesion and surface analysis of the peel failure surfaces to understand the failure mechanisms. Based on peel strength measurements and their associated failure surfaces a model is proposed to explain adhesion degradation. The model proposes that water absorbed by the polyimide during processing or from the ambient can react with the damaged region of the polyimide and/or the metal layer, resulting in adhesion degradation. The results of these experiments support the proposed adhesion degradation mechanism.
