How data are presented visually has a powerful effect on the perception and interpretation of the structure in those data. This article addresses the question of how the interpretation of data be enhanced. To address this question, the structure of the data, the perception of the visual dimensions used in visualization, and the task the analyst is trying to solve are addressed. The discussion is illustrated using examples drawn from a variety of color-mapping schemes.
