Bio

Serpil Kiokekli received her BSc degree in Chemistry from the University of Crete in Greece. Her BSc thesis focused on computational studies of enzyme-substrate interactions to explain the experimental results obtained in the lab, and improve the enzyme efficiency by proposing targeted mutations. During her undergraduate internship at the Ultrafast Laser Micro- and Nano- Processing Group (IESL-FORTH), she trained on the ultrafast laser setup for designing various shapes on hard and soft materials to study light-matter interactions and optimize the materials' properties for medical use, under the “Perforation of intraocular medical lenses with ultrafast laser pulses” project in collaboration with EyeYon Medical (Israel). During her MSc, he delved more into materials science and conducted research on the chemical parameters that affect the shape of colloidal nanocrystals and their properties and efficiency as quantum dots. Currently, she joined IBM Research as a PhD student focusing on the fabrication of silicon microreactors and their use in catalysis in the aim of forming molecular factories. Her interests lay on exploratory science, leaning towards inorganic chemistry practices for material enhancement and discovery keeping sustainability as the prominent goal.
