Marcelo Nery dos Santos is a Research Software Engineer at IBM Research – Brazil since May 2012. Marcelo holds a M. Sc. (2006) in Informatics from Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), Brazil and a B.Sc. (2002) in Computer Science from Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil. He is currently working on software platforms for knowledge-centric systems, with focus on accelerated discovery.
During his masters, Marcelo joined Tecgraf - Computer Graphics Technology Group - at PUC-Rio and developed GridFS – A File Server for Grids and Heterogeneous Distributed Environments. More than 15 years later, GridFS is still used in multiple integration projects at Tecgraf / Petrobras. Marcelo also worked as an Intern (2006) at the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute – SCI at the University of Utah, on activities related to the Vistrails project.
As a software engineer, Marcelo worked at Microsoft (Canada/USA), from 2008 to 2011, where he was responsible for creating test automation infrastructure for the Microsoft Lync product, as well as evaluating the product’s performance characteristics. Prior to Microsoft, Marcelo worked on projects ranging from web applications to embedded applications for cellular phones, including areas such as IPTV, Device Drivers, Productivity Games and Information Retrieval.
In 2013, Marcelo got the IBM Eminence & Excellence Award for contributions and technical leadership on projects related to the Natural Resources area. In 2015/2016, Marcelo got the IBM Outstanding Technical Achievement Award for contributions on the IBM Green Horizon project.
