Dr. Fabrizio Nichele first joined the IBM Research – Zurich Lab as a visiting scientist in May of 2018. In January of 2019, he became a Research Staff Member. His main research interests are topological excitations in superconductor/semiconductor devices. In 2018 he was awarded an ERC Starting Grant from the European Union for carrying out a project on topological states in two-dimensional electron gases.
Prior to this, he was a research consultant for Microsoft Research, where he worked on Majorana modes in hybrid two-dimensional electron gases.
After serving a post-doctoral fellowship, he became Assistant Professor (Adjunct) at the Center for Quantum Devices and Station Q Copenhagen of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, working on topological superconductivity in InAs-based devices and InAs/GaSb double quantum wells.
Fabrizio holds a PhD in Physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, and a Master’s degree from Politecnico di Milano, Italy. His doctoral work on transport experiment in nanostructures with strong spin-orbit interaction was awarded with the ETH medal. He has also been a Marie Curie individual Fellow of the European Commission.
