Dr. Andrea Giovannini is an AI Research Engineer in the Cognitive Computing and Industry Solutions department at IBM Research – Zurich. He is also a University Lecturer in the Engineering department at ETH Zurich and in the Informatics department at BFH.
Andrea received his Doctoral degree from the ETH Zurich in 2014 with his thesis entitled “Droplet-based laser-produced plasma sources — photon emission, matter expansion and mitigation”.
Before joining IBM Research, he was a Lead Data Scientist at IBM Switzerland. There he had the technical lead in multiple client engagements based on decision support systems, image processing and data analytics. In IBM Research Andrea worked on reasoning systems and on fusing multimodal data. Currently, he is working on the Lab that Learns applying foundation models to the processing of multimodal data, where he focuses on creating the whole architecture and infrastructure to deploy the solution in a multi-cloud environment.
In 2017, he was distinguished with the IBM Top Talent Award, and in 2018, he received an IBM Research A-Level Accomplishment Award for developing Cognitive Health Decision Support Systems (CHeDeSS). These systems — now in production — interact with patients and guide them from their initial symptoms to a triage decision. The questions are automatically chosen by the system and are generated dynamically based on historical data.
