Terahertz optics

Abstract

An approach whereby optical techniques are adapted to terahertz frequencies is demonstrated. The approach is distinguished by excellent time resolution and essentially complete collection of the radiation. An ultrafast point-dipole source (Hertzian dipole) is located at the focal point of a spherical lens or mirror that can either focus the radiated pulse onto a detector or collimate the emission to produce a beam of freely propagating ultrashort electrical pulses.
