Some general, user-oriented concepts for discrete utterance recognition (DUR) application

Abstract

A major drawback of commercially available DUR systems is the inability of the user to easily develop and modify his applications for these devices. For example, it he wants to change the use of the recognizer from a quality control task to an inventory management application, he must either go back to the manufacturer or substantially modify all special application code. Here, concepts for what has come to be called "Automatic Application Generation" (AAG), based upon several years of experience, are presented. Simplicity to the end user, capability to produce complex application structures, and modularity are stressed. Examples are presented, and implementational considerations are discussed.
