Soft X-ray microscopy is under development in a number of laboratories, primarily for biological applications. Synchrotron radiation, especially because of its brightness and tunability plays a crucial role in this work. We review the motivation for using soft X-rays in biological imaging, and discuss the approaches and techniques in use. In addition we attempt a look into the future, especially in connection with three dimensional imaging and applications in surface science. © 1986.
