We report data on the resonant Raman scattering (RS) by crystal violet (CV) adsorbed on Ag and Au surfaces. The data show that the RS and luminescence by CV on a smooth Au surface is greater by an order of magnitude than that on a smooth Ag surface. These results, which are contrary to what one expects from mechanisms that depend on the complex dielectric constant of the metal substrate, are attributed to contributions that depend on the chemical bonding of the CV molecules with the metal substrate. © 1983.
