The authors provide an overview of the optimization system of the MIS multilevel logic synthesis and minimization system that is part of the Berkeley Synthesis Project at the University of California. The overview includes the input language, the algorithms which minimize the area of the implementation, and the algorithms used to restructure the logic network to meet the system-level timing constraints. Although the system is still under development, pieces of an industrially designed chip have been resynthesized with MIS and the results compare favorably with the manual designs.
