The active-matrix liquid-crystal display (AMLCD) is a major information display device for portable and desktop display as it has been providing low power, light weight, and crisp images even at printer resolutions. There have been various approaches to increase the overall luminous efficiency of the backlight that include field-sequential-color illuminated LCD and use of a static illumination scheme in which each AMLCD subpixel is illuminated by its corresponding component. Such system can be create by placing a microlens array that is placed beneath each full pixel and employing a tri-color directional back-light illuminator consisting of three linear fluorescent lamps that each produces only one color primary. The angular speed of the illuminator can be improved by using discrete light-emitting diodes that approximate point sources of light, together with a collimating parabolic-cylinder reflector.
