ARITHMETIC CODING FOR DISCRETE MESSAGES.

Abstract

Data compression and channel encoding are two aspects of the same process. Both use channel messages to represent source messages, and aim to minimize the expected cost of the channel messages. The author develops a notation that enables one to understand the various forms of arithmetic coder, and to describe their operation precisely.
