The team pushes the frontiers of the ‘Geospatial Discovery Network’, a cloud native platform to accelerate the discovery of climate impacts based on satellite imagery, weather, and climate data in combination with physics-informed AI at scale.
Thomas joined IBM Research in 2001 with a research focus on Micro- and Nanotechnology in the domain of Integrated Photonics, Organic Light Emitting Diode Displays, and Electronic Packaging. He then performed as Technical Assistant to the IBM Research – Zurich lab director for scientific and strategic planning. Finally, he redefined his research focus to Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in the field of Digital Health and later in Climate Informatics.
He earned a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Computer Science at ETH Zurich in 2019 and his PhD in Electrical Engineering at the TU Berlin in 2012 (cum laude). He performed his master’s in Microtechnology and bachelor’s in physical technologies at the Interstate University of Applied Science Buchs (NTB) in 2001 and 1999, respectively.
Thomas authored and co-authored over 100 publications, three book chapters and over 65 patents. He is currently an expert at Innosuisse, an IEEE Senior Member, and was a board member of the IEEE Electronics Packaging Society, as well as the Swiss Physical Society and was the general conference chair of ITherm 2018.
